Troll VS Trawl

Trolling – or trawling? – for eggcorns - CSMonitor.com

這篇文章果然很有趣,看來是作者不想工作,分神在想無聊事,然後順藤摸瓜抽出一堆奇奇怪怪(褒義)的內容,真是熟悉不過的情境(笑)

事緣作者在「trolling for ideas for a project」,卻不肯定要用trolling還是trawling,為了確定比喻準確,於是上網去查清楚意思。剛好我也有非常相似的煩惱,真是幫大忙了。

Simply put, trolling is pulling bait or a lure behind a boat as it moves slowly through the water.... The basic difference between these two similar terms is that trawling involves a net and is typically done for commercial fishing purposes, while trolling involves a rod, reel, and a bait or lure," and is typically done by recreational fishermen.

經過簡單查證,從字面意思來看,取用Troll來比喻會比較好。

接著,圍繞Troll和Trawl又牽出一堆語言八卦,比如飛白 / malapropism還有Eggcorn,都是沒聽過的修辭。在字典查到Eggcorn的意思是「a word or phrase that a person wrongly thinks is another word or phrase that sounds similar」,但沒顯示中文解釋,所以我在想是不是指「空耳」。

然後萬能的Google送來答案

Mondegreen 是指對歌詞、詩詞、諺語或口號的「耳誤詞」,也就是「誤聽詞」。中文還有一個名詞專門用來指聽錯的歌詞,那就是「空耳」

Eggcorn 同樣是「誤聽詞」,但大多是有意義或至少有一些意義的「誤聽詞」。

順藤摸瓜,果然會扯出越來越多相關的資料w回正題,文章最後給了我最想要的答案。

To 'troll' through an archive would mean to glide through it and see what catches your interest, while to 'trawl' it would mean to read everything you come across. I think 'troll' makes more sense with the intended meaning.

本來想像了「拖網捕魚守候獵物」的狀態,所以想到了「Trawl」,不過兩者似乎都跟我所想的形容有輕微出入,但部份疑慮得到解答還是不錯的體驗。
